If your ancestors were from any of the areas that make up Tameside then you are in luck as we also hold the archives for Tameside. These include sources that can help put the leaves on your family tree. There are records such as census, parish registers, rate books, registers of electors, historical trade directories and telephone books, school records, hospital records, company records, personal papers, local newspapers going back to the 1850’s, Ordnance Survey maps starting from 1845, 1840’s tithe maps and accompanying apportionment books (which record landowners and occupiers), and much, much more…It is worth remembering that the majority of these records are unique to the Archives and not available anywhere else. If you are researching a soldier you may be interested to know that World War One service records are now being added to Ancestry. If your ancestor was in the Manchester Regiment you may be able to find his service or pension records or details of his campaign medals if (he served overseas) and of course we do have the records of the Manchester Regiment which includes war diaries, post 1920 enlistment War diaries, enlistment books and photographs.
